Purpose: Independently and with assistance diagnoses, repairs and maintains the building, machinery and mechanical equipment using one or more of the following trades: hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, masonry, welding, carpentry and plumbing.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**
Carries out all duties and responsibilities with an emphasis on safety. Follows established guidelines and safety procedures in the completion of all duties.
Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
Observes and listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunctions and to diagnose problems or to make repairs.
Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts. Reassembles machines and equipment after repairs. Starts and tests machines to check operations.
Repairs defective parts. Installs and adjusts special functional and structural parts in devices and control instruments.
Assembles and installs new machines and equipment.
Occasionally drives a forklift to move equipment and parts. Performs the checks and tasks listed on the forktruck operations checklist on all forklifts staged in the designated area each morning.
Performs preventative maintenance on various machines including air compressors which requires light maintenances tasks such as: change and install lacing on conveyor belts, replace drive belts or chains, replace sprockets and bearings, replace machine parts.
Sets up and operates machines and equipment used for maintenance and repair, including gas or arc-welding equipment, soldering or welding equipment, drills and drill presses, grinders and other power tools, and precision measuring and testing instruments or hand tools to make, repair, or fabricate machine parts, jigs, fixtures and tools.
Repairs and maintains physical structure of the building (roof repairs, plumbing, air conditioning, etc.).
**Other Duties and Responsibilities:**
Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems that consist of relay logic, programmable logic controllers, frequency drives, and electrical distribution equipment.
Cleans up work area daily and as needed.
May initiate purchase requisitions for parts and machines, forwarding them to the supervisor for approval and processing.
Performs other projects and duties as required or requested.
Perform minor building maintenance and light maintenance in the 840 Hampden rental units as required.
**Physical Demands:**
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 lbs, and infrequently lift and/or move up to 100 lbs, with proper equipment and/or personnel.
**Work Environment:**
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The environment in the fiber department is very dusty, and may be extremely warm during the summer months. The noise level is frequently loud in various parts of the manufacturing area (hearing protection is required in those areas). The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to hazardous materials.
